Fapajal's history

A journey in time

In the 260 years that have passed since 1755, the history of Fapajal (current name of the formerly called Abelheira paper mill) is intertwined with the history of Portugal. The new owners of the company wish to pursue historical investigations, aware of its importance for the Council of Loures and the country in general.

The beginning of the Abelheira paper mill

1755–1834

It was because of the 1755 earthquake that Quinta da Abelheira and paper making became intertwined. Seeking shelter from the city in ruins and their monastery’s, Augustinian monks came to Tojal.

Suppression of the religious orders and the first investment period

1834–1899

The liberal constitutional regime came to power and immediate changes followed. Male religious orders were suppressed on May 30, 1834, and the state confiscated their property.

The Grahams and the second investment period

1899-1967

In 1899, Astley Campbell, William Smith’s heir, decided to sell the Quinta to the William Graham Júnior & Cia company, established in Lisbon since 1809.

Floods and the closing of the mill

1967-1973

On the night of 25 to 26 November 1967, torrential rain caused widespread flooding of the Abelheira paper mill.

Reopening, nationalization and restructuring

1973-1999

In April 1973, one of the creditors of the Graham Indústria de Papel da Abelheira S.A.R.L., the “Companhia Portuguesa de Celulose”, filed a request to establish a creditors society, in order to reopen the company.

Privatization and new investments

1999-Present

In mid-1999, a tendering procedure was launched to privatize Fapajal, by then converted into a public limited company and dispossessed of Quinta da Abelheira.
